Colorado Shooting: the tip of the iceberg
Nothing is new under the sun. Teens' brains haven't mutated, but systemic changes in the surrounding community have. While each case is different, their frequency reflects the real costs of untreated teen depression and the deteriorating social support that let's kids fall through the cracks of an overburdened mental health system. The tragic killings are just the tip of an ignored iceberg that causes the full spectrum of acting out behaviors. Regardless of one's position on guns, we can all agree the solution is best when the problem is still small. Training teachers, clergy, and parents to read the red flags early on will have far larger an effect. Finally, educate the kids themselves; make discussion of depression required in health and science classes in school. Encourage kids to tell someone if they can't tell their folks. All of this wouldn't take much and would be more efficient than measures after a crime or tragedy.
